Yesterday’s story had its desired effect. When Lucia awoke, she opened her texting with the family by saying, I needed that. You think you know someone after eighteen years of being their sister.
But if that weren’t affirmation enough, my old work pal from a previous job, Patrick, called, and we were shooting the breeze a bit when he said, “Hey, so your dispatch today. You know, that stuff about dreaming of the college class you forgot to attend and you didn’t actually graduate . . . man, I thought I was the only one who had that dream. I just had it the other day, and when I woke up, I had to remind myself that no one was about to show up at my house to take my diploma.”
“Yeah,” I said. “And there’s the fact that life events have way overtaken the importance of that diploma now. It’s not like you haven’t worked as a successful professional for twenty years.”
“Very true,” he said.
So you see, dear readers, that’s what I’m here for—to help all six of you feel less alone in your trials, tribulations, and nightmares.
Meanwhile, out in Pennsylvania, big things are shaking. Grant had his first day of spring practice—probably his last spring ball ever since he will be a senior in the fall. In the past, Grant has often had me watch his practice film to give him an idea of what corrections he might be looking at. This year, he said they had changed film apps and that he wouldn’t bug me about it anyway. So naturally, an hour after he finished practice, he texted me what app to get and how to access it. Same as it ever was.
Forty-five minutes to the northwest, Lauren got Lindsay to class and took her for a visit with the trainers where they promised to get her a disabled placard for her car; they also scheduled various of her rehab visits and found her a place to do a follow-up X-ray that her doctor wants. Lauren managed to fit in work around all that, as well, and delighted her teammates by being in “her” dorm room. “Show us your dorm room! We miss college!”
Clearly, Brayden hasn’t been feeling enough love and attention because he broke into the family chat today with this gem: Saved a life yesterday. It was pretty sick lol.
Wait, what?
Lucia: He performed the Heimlich maneuver on someone choking on a piece of steak. He like jumped over a table and everything. He’s being put up for the highest non-combat award.
Me: That’s amazing.
Lauren: It is. Way to think cool in a scary situation.
Lucia: Yes and my friend Cherry was talking about how attractive Brayden is yesterday. He’s a hot commodity.
Lauren: Seriously
Lucia: The commanding officer is going to the hangar bay to thank Brayden personally.

Me: That’s awesome! Of course, Brayden has to tell him that he owes it all to Dobby.
Lucia: Well, duh.
And that’s really the point here. Whatever you can do Dobby can do better. He can do anything greater than you.
