A few weeks ago I was scrolling Facebook on my laptop and came upon some recommended reels. The first was a super fit girl hitting a golf ball. I clicked it. I have no memory of it was demonstrating or entertaining about—its song knocked me out. But I had never heard it and needed to know what it was. The clip was short, maybe fifteen seconds. I grabbed my phone, hit Shazam, and played the clip again. Shazam gave me a song, I looked it up on YouTube Music . . . and it was definitely not what the reel had played. Great job, Shazam! I tried the whole process again and got the exact same result. Ugh.
Now, I listened to the clip over and over until I could memorize one of the lines. Then I typed that line into Google with the search term lyric, and I got WAM by A$AP Ferg. I looked up on YT Music again, and yep, that was it, and it was as good through the whole song as the short clip I had heard. That also led me to find Ferg’s Trap Lord—great stuff. I sent a link to “WAM” to Lindsay and said, “Good song to add to your workout playlist.” She hearted it. I sent it to Grant who just gave me the thumbs up. I also played it for Graham who loves Brooklyn drill. Graham can never quite admit that he likes stuff I recommend to him. I’m the one who introduced him to Brooklyn drill via Bobby Shmurda and Pop Smoke. In those cases and in this, he made some kind of crack about Spongebob doing similar music. Only later does he say stuff like, “I was in the last rough stretch of my run, and ‘Dior’ by Pop Smoke came up on my playlist, and I just flew through that last mile.” Oh, I see.
Last night I was driving home from a messy school committee meeting and trying to de-stress; I turned on some of my own playlist, and as I did, I got a text from Lindsay. (Relax: tech exists now to let you drive hands free, hear texts, and respond.)
L: Obsessed with the song WAM.
Then, she sent a snapshot from Graham’s Snap story. (Remember that I told you he likens new songs to Spongebob?)

L: THAT’S SO FREAKY! Graham posted this right as I was listening to it! Like when I texted you.
Me: That’s so weird.
L: The ghost is working again.
Me: Guess what song is on in my car right now.
L: Nuh uh
Me: 4 zones [This is a song by Young Jeezy.]
L: I LOVE THAT SONG
Me: I know. Came on as you texted me.
L: we’re all connected even though we’re far away🥲🥲
It’s almost symbolic
We’re not connected by blood or anything
And I don’t have your eyes or anything
But it’s the ~music~
I miss you
Me: Miss you too.
L: Graham and me just now:

So what do we learn here? Our ghost likes trap and Brooklyn drill. It’s also nice to be missed. We are back to normal today, though. As I wrote this, Lindsay texted this about her boyfriend and brought up this ridiculous so-called love of honey I have:
L: Carson is so sore from our workout yesterday he can’t lift his arms. I’m as giddy as dad is when they restock honey at Walmart.
Me: Flatten your palm and poke him in the chest super hard. Tell him it’s from me. With love.
L: I will.
[a minute later]
L: He goes “owwwwwww that hurt.”
That’s my girl.
