The Space for the Bad

They are at Raymond Rimkus park in San Antonio. The boy’s mother has pitched three rounds to the boy and to Stephen. They are walking back to the car.

“We have been learning about drugs in school.”

“It’s sad they have to teach you that so young.”

“Mom, do you ever get scared about stuff like that? Drugs and all the bad stuff in the world?”

“I used to. I used to feel almost paralyzed over everything that could go wrong or everything my kids might do wrong. But there are also lots of great things. And my kids can do so many awesome things that I focus on that. If I focus on the good, it makes the space for the bad smaller.”
